I can't work out if the Maxc has some malware/bugs which have loaded from each Mac via the Timne Machine back up, but they have all been painful and I'm thinking that if I can just back up the photos then I'll wipe the machine just to keep the pictures etc. I contacted WD again and they were happy to look at replacing (August 2022), but to be honest I got fed up with it. Again the WS app shows all is fine, but the Mac can't see the drive. They sent me another and all was fine until again, about 2 months and the same has happened. I sent the WD drive back as it was in warranty. Not in Finder and Disk Utility just shows the message loading disks. Thew WD utility app can find the external hard drive but the Mac doesnt see it in any way. I bought a 2TB portable hard disk on which to run Time Machine and it was fine for a few weeks, but then stopped backing up. I had a WD external hard drive running Time Machine until someone stood on the plug (it was powered from the mains and always worked well). This one is now painful although there is plenty of memory available. I have a 2017 iMac, I've had a couple of iMacs before and they have all just run really slowly.
